Mr Henry Frederick Hardy, long well known as a pioneer colonist , an architect and a justice of the peace, was born in Derbyshir e, England, on 11th February 1831. He was educated at Matlock an d brought up to the business of a grocer at Wirksworth in his na tive county. -
On 25th September 1853 he was nearly wrecked in the ship 'Rajah ' in a hurricane, but after a voyage of a hundred and 17 days, a rrived at Port Chalmers on 5th October of that year.Mr Hardy had been very fond of carpentry work from his boyhood , and found the knowledge he had gained invaluable to him in th e new land to which he had come. He, however, apprenticed himsel f to the cabinet making business, and afterwards helped to const ruct the first ship built in Dunedin, which was named 'Star of D unedin'. .............
He and his wife lived at Waverley in Dunedin. He had attended Ot ago Boys High School and apparently stayed in Dunedin all his li fe.
